Fancy Free

Dressing is a private ritual of our morning that speaks in our silence throughout our day. I find that fact disturbing on days when I don't have a lot to say or anything relevant to wear, in places where I know others are "listening." In linguistics we sit silently, waiting for the right words to surface. But in fashion siting in the nude in public waiting for the right outfit would make a very bold statement which is unlikely to articulate our message of the day. Stumbling upon an article by Anne Elizabeth Wynn, she says "Dressing each morning is a ritual greeting of the day. Style is what you want to make of that ritual." So I suppose we just work with what we have. Jean Cocteau noted that, "Style is a simple way of saying complicated things," to which I'd love to follow up, "subject to availability." I prefer a more lasting message, a deeper statement. A great speaker will always be more valuable to me than a great sneaker, no matter how fashionable.
